Could Irregular Periods Indicate Unbalanced Hormones?

My girlfriends period has been abnormal lately, and she doesn t have insurance to see a doctor. Instead of the normal once a month period, 3 months have gone by since she last got her period. After that, the next month she had her period like normal, but is currently on the 11th day of it, which doesn t seem normal. Is it just unbalanced hormones and what are the best ways to fix it? Thank you.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Irregular periods is caused due to hormonal imbalance namely alteratiins in estrogen and progesterone levels.
There are many causes which could cause imbalance in these hormones. The one which is common and what she could be having is Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD).
Before the institution of treatment, it needs to be evaluated.
Minimum work-up what is necessary for that are the following:
1. Blood checked for FSH, LH and Prolactin levels.
2. Ultrasound scan of pelvis.
Kindly consult Gynecologist with the reports for clinical examination and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
