Could Kerosene With Sugar Be Taken For Cough With Phlegm?

when I was young my grandmother would give me and my brother a spoonful of sugar with a couple drops of kerosene on it and it would break up the congestion. We got so used to it, we d fake coughs sometimes to get it. I had pneumonia in the lower right lobe 2 weeks ago, and still am having phlem problems, can I try the kerosene

Hi,

Kerosene does not have any proven effect on cough and congestion. Conversely it may induce vomiting and causing aspiration, thus resulting in choking or aspiration pneumonia. In your case as you are already recovering from pneumonia, it may make your condition worse.
