Could Lip Smacking Be Due To Long Term Usage Of Anxiety Medications?

My husband is 75 and on a variety of anti-anxiety meds. Something called a California rocket fuel. About two months ago he started smacking his lips. Now it has become nearly constant. he insists there is nothing wrong but it is driving me crazy and I think it may be a side effect of one of his meds.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

The symptoms can be related to tardive dyskinesia which is a side effect of the anti anxiety medications.
Tardive dyskinesias are involuntary twitching or writhing movements, often affecting the face, mouth, and tongue.
The symptoms can include lip-smacking, chewing movements, and tongue movements.
I suggest to consult your doctor about this side effect.

Hope my answer was helpful.

If you have further queries feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards!
