Could My Mom S Difficulty Breathing, Coughing, And Rib Pain Be Related To Her Previous Rectal Cancer And Lung Metastasis?

My Mom was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2020, has lung metastasis, undergone radiation and chemotheraphy. Metastasis in lungs did not change or develop after the treatment in Nov of 2021, didnt feel anything wrong with her breathing. This year 2023 she s having a hard time taking deep breath it will cause her to cough, and there is pain on her lower rib cage. She was advised to have X-ray and the findings are moderate pleural effusion, aorta calcified and scoliosis on thoracic spine.

Oncologist 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, the findings suggest that the disease is in the lungs and that may be the cause of breathlessness and pain. You must visit a doctor for pain relief and breathlessness. Pleural fluid removal can lead to improvement in breathlessness.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Deepak Sundriyal, Oncologist
