Could My Throat And Neck Pain Be A Sign Of Cancer From Smoking?

Hi, I am 20 year old Indian. I started smoking at 19. I smoke one cigarette every alternate day i.e. I smoke 4 cigarettes per week. From last week I have pain in the right side of my throat. I even had neck pain but now the neck pain is gone. My mouth is also a little sensitive from last week. Did i get throat or neck or oral cancer?

Hello,

You have been smoking for about a year (4 per week), which reduces but does not eliminate the risk of cancer. Get clinically examined by an ENT or a GP to rule out redness, swelling, ulcers, lumps, or white patches inside the throat, tonsils, etc. Get a throat swab and culture done to rule out bacterial or viral infections. If throat pain persists, your treating doctor will do laryngoscopy to study in detail your voice cords and throat.

A biopsy will be done if the ENT sees patches, sores, or growths. If needed, a neck ultrasound will be done to rule out lymph node issues, infections, or other causes. If no alarming signs are found, no advanced tests will be recommended. But if symptoms persist beyond 2 weeks, further evaluation may be needed.

Throat pain and mouth sensitivity can be caused by many non-cancerous conditions. However, stop smoking. Stay hydrated, avoid very spicy foods, and rest the throat. If there is no pathology found, you will be given symptomatic treatment.

Hope I have answered your question. Take care.

Regards,
