Could Pain In Back Indicate Presence Of Kidney Stones?

How can I tell the difference between back pain from a muscle or back pain from a kidney stone? I woke up the other day with an annoying pain on left lower back. I don t remember twisting or turning wrong. I am in good shape-lift a lot of weights. My wife got me thinkin it may be a stone but I don t know if the pain is bad enough. I have a pretty high pain threshold so that is what is scaring me Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Sir,

Thank you for your question and welcome to health Care Magic. I read your query and I understand your concern.

The fact that you do not remember twisting or turning wrong, doesn't exclude its origin from muscle spasm, which could be caused from inappropriate standing position. Pain may include muscle spasms, tenderness upon touch and it is relieved when resting and worse during certain activities.
In order to help me with finding the proper diagnose, you have to describe me the location, severity and type of pain, in addition to the history of the pain, such as is there any activities or positions that makes the pain better or worse.
Regarding kidney stones, the classic presentation of renal colic is intensive pain in unilateral flank or lower abdominal pain of sudden onset that is not related to any precipitating event and is not relieved by postural changes or nonnarcotic medications.

Hope I helped with my answer. For further concerns feel free to ask again.

Take Care,
Dr. Ina Zaimi
