Could Pain In Chest And Coughing Up Dark Phlegm Indicate Cancer?

I have been noticing some chest pain and i saw a cardiologist and had an EKG done and my heart was healthy, but i still have been having the pains and sometimes i will caugh up darker colored phlegm. I have been worrying that I may have lung cancer and i think that has been giving me anxiety. Also I am 21 yearls old and a male.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, there are various reasons for dark phlegm as severe respiratory tract infection, pneumonia or others. The cancer is very less likely as there are no associated features of weight loss, chronic fever, loss of appetite and others. The pneumonia is striking possibility. However, in my clinic, I do recommend:
- Thorough clinical examination
- History of smoking and family history of cancer if any,
- Relevant investigations of
@ Complete hemogram
@ Sputum microscopy
@ X-ray chest with or without CT scan thorax

If your any of the reports are available at present, kindly share with me during follow up chat for further discussion.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
