Could Persistent Dryness In Mouth Indicate Thyroid Issue?

I have extremely dry mouth. No amount of water quenches my thirst. If I chew gum too long, I begin to choke because my mouth is so dry. The only medication I take are my birth control pills which I ve taken for years with no problems. Could it be a thyroid issue? I check my thyroid every year with good results.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain Dry mouth or Xerostomia can occur due to long term intake of certain medication and Oral contraceptives are one among those..
Due to alteration in hormonal levels by Oral contraceptives can lead to a dry mouth..

At times hypothyroidism which is reduced level of thyroid hormones in blood can also lead to Dry mouth but as you have normal levels it doesn't seems to be causative factor for Dry mouth and Oral contraceptives are causative of it in your case..

You should consult your gynaecologist and get evaluated and if possible get your medicines altered in dose..

For relieving the dry mouth you should instill artificial salivary agent containing methyl cellulose which has to be instilled frequently through out the day..

Sour candies, lemon drops taken frequently during the day can help in stimulating saliva flow from glands..

Drink plenty of cold water..

Maintain a good Oral hygiene in patients with dry mouth more of dental decay and Oral infections are seen due to lack of flushing action of debris by saliva..

Hope this information helps you..

Thanks and regards..
