Could Prolonged T6 Parapalegics Cause Extreme Leg Spasms?

My boyfriend is a t6 parapalegics for the past 45 years. He has recently begun searing below the lesion level and is having very strong leg spasms. Why might this be? He is an almost total para but no complete. Any information you could give us would be very helpful. Sincerely, F W.
