Could Rapid Heartbeat Have Been Caused By Depression And Anxiety?

I m having periodic moments of extremely rapid heartbeat - to the point of about a three second flutter - much of the time at night before I m going to sleep. I have been going through significant depression and anxiety after the loss of my father two months ago and other issues involving work and family. These flutters are followed by a quick feeling of almost gasping for breath. My heartbeat will remain elevated while I try to breathe in a controlled way. Could this just be from the depression and anxiety or is there something else I should be concerned about?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Anxiety may cause the heartbeat to go high and also cause shortness of breath. On the other hand, a visit with your doctor is needed to have your heart and lungs checked to rule out these problems first.
The doctor will need to listen to your lungs and also may ask for an ECG and if necessary may ask for other tests as well.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
