Could Removal Of Cyst From Wrist Cause Shaky Hand While Writing?

For quite sometime (about 10 years) I have been having difficulty writing with my right hand...when I try to write my hand shakes so badly that I lose control...and it continues to get worse. I ve had an EMG and physical therapy done on my right hand but they can find nothing. I did have a cyst removed on my right wrist about 8 years ago. They have mentioned a possible damaged nerve. I can still bowl and play pool...it s just the writing. Any thoughts why it is getting more difficult to write?

Hello,

You had cyst removal from the wrist (R), 8 yrs ago. Presently, you are experiencing difficulty in writing with your right hand. Post removal of the cyst may cause injuries to the surrounding tendons, nerves, or ligaments. This may cause losing the ability to move the wrist normally.

It can cause pain, tingling, numbness or muscle weakness at the later part of life. Damage to the nerves commonly causes shaky hands and may complicate to tremor if not treated. Your symptom may be indicative of developing peripheral neuropathy. You are suggested to take food rich in vitamin B6, B12 or supplements. You are also suggested to get connected to a neurologist, get all required nerve conduction velocity tests done. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

You have history of cyst removal from your wrist (R), 8years ago. Presently you can bowl and do other things with your affected hand but writing is becoming a challenge. Your right hand starts shaking so much that you lose control. The possible causes for your symptoms are use of nerve block during cyst removal, sometimes nerve block may damage specific nerve or cluster of nerves. It may also occur due to damage of the nerves that run through the surgical site. Nerve injury (nerve cut) may also cause the manifested symptoms.

Surgical nerve damage may cause permanent nerve damage can be a potential side effect of surgery. Risks should be informed before hand to the patient. Other factor that may cause similar symptoms are essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a Neurologist, get all nerve conduction velocity test and required investigations done. Get treated at the earliest.

Neglect may make symptoms worse and affect eating, drinking, writing, and all the other daily tasks you do with your hands can become a bigger challenge. In the meantime, stay active. Get connected to a physical therapist and do regular exercises, take food rich in vitamin B12. You can also take supplements. Stay away from stress(physical and emotional), avoid taking alcohol and caffeine as they may make symptoms worse. Control your blood sugar level at all cost and get treated if you have an overactive thyroid.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
