Could Shortness Of Breath And Rashes Be Due To Allergy Towards Hypothyroid Medicines?
Hello, I ve been on liothyronine for a few years. My new doctor added levothyroxine because she said she never prescribes liothyronine by itself. After a few days of taking the levothyroxine, I developed a major rash on both of the lower part of my legs, which went away after discontinuing. Recently, on the liothyronine alone, I ve been experiencing shortness of breath, tightening in my chest and rashes and itching on both forearms. Is it possible that I am allergic to medications for hypothyroidism? If so, what can I take? Thanks, Pam C.
I have gone carefully through your report and I am trying to give you some more suggestions.
I would also recommend you to start the treatment with levothyroxine if you have never taken it before because is more convenient than liothyronine. As levothyroxine is a hormone that our body produces, one can not be allergic of it.
Allergic reactions due to levothyroxine are very rare and it is due to a dye that may contain a brand of levothyroxine.
I would suggest you to change the brand of levothyroxine (consult your pharmacist to suggest a brand without dye) and if the allergic reaction persists, try to start a low dose and than increase the dose gradually. Hope the information is helpful.
Kind regards, Dr.M.Guni
