Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a pulsating in my skull for almost a year. I have been to a cardiologist and he could find anything wrong. I had a scan of my skull they found nothing wrong. I also went to an ENT doctor and he couldn't find anything wrong. I asked my internal doctor if it could be the simvastatin I was taking because every drug that I haven taken to lower my cholesterol has affected me in some way. After a year of the frightening pulse in my head that occurred more often at night I decided not to take my cholesterol at night. After 6 days I have not had the pulsating in my head.
What an interesting case. Thank you for sharing this information. Before I even reached your last sentence I knew I was going to say yes, simvastatin could be behind those pulsations. Here is the enigma. You cannot take simvastatin, doesthat mean you cannot take any statin or just simvastatin because you still need to look at your hyperlipidemia problem. And, you need to be following and individualized diet prescribed by your physician based on your labs and diagnosis. You need a hyperlipidemia diet appropriate in calories for your weight goals, instruction on exercise and basic lifestyle modifications to maintain quality of life despite your battles with the blood lipids. Also, remember, if you end up going on another statin medication one should always take coenzyme Q10 with it since statins will cause a deficiency of this nutrient which may make you feel ill, have muscle or chest pains. Please come back if I can help you in any other manner. Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
