Could Slurred Speech Be Due To Tramadol?

Dr. Rynne, A 90-year-old female had a fall. An MRI shows no sign of injury (no stroke, no brain bleed), and she can move her left arm without a problem She is having trouble with coherent speech, however, and we wonder if this could be a side effect of getting tramidol through an IV-drip for a back ache (associated with the fall, we think)? She s also on medication for a bladder infection.

Hello,

There is no evidence that suggests that IV Tramadol can cause slurred speech or incoherent speech. That might be caused due to a head injury, brain tumor, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, or Parkinson's disease.

As her MRI is clear without any brain injury or bleed or stroke, we need to investigate for other causes. Please consult a neuro-physician for further evaluation. Tramadol will not cause any slurred or altered speech.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
