Could Spasms In Chest And Back Be Due To Lack Of Potassium?
I had hyper parathyroid surgery 1 year ago and was feeling great. For the past week I am tired, have spasms in different parts of my body, fingers & toes cramp & separate. the spams in my chest & back area are tight & achey. Is this possibly lack of potassium. Waiting for blood work. 3 months ago it was perfect.
I understand that your parathyroid glands have been removed 1 year ago. Parathyroid secretes parathormone which is primarily involved with calcium regulation and bone remodelling. If you were my patient my first suspicion would be a reduced calcium levels in your blood which could be causing the spasms and ache. However, to rule out other conditions which can have such presentation, I would order a complete blood and electrolytes workup including potassium levels and depending on that I would formulate a treatment plan for you.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Tejas, General & Family Physician
