Could Stinging Pain In Breast Be Due To Miscarriage Or Infected Milk Gland?

Hi Dr. I have a burning, stinging pain in my right breast almost next to the nipple. It is not sore at all only if you press really hard or when I lie on my stomach a certain way. This has been happening for two days now. I did a breast examination myself and do not see any changes or feel anything. I had a miscarridge on the 24th of November, can this be hormonal or an infected milk gland? Kindly advise?

Hi,

The possible causes of breast pain in your case are:
- General causes like wearing tight undergarments, sleeping in prone position
- Due to hormonal changes, breast pain and engorgement can be seen before menstruation
- Sometimes milk development can be seen after abortion especially when abortion occurs at later gestational age
- Infected gland or breast tissue can also lead to pain as you mentioned.

Measures that can help you are:
- Try to change your sleeping position
- Ice packs
- Analgesic and anti inflammatory drugs

If pain still persists, please consult your gynecologist once, get examined and if needed go for sonomammography, with this workup the possible cause your problem can be identified and treated.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
