Could Swelling Followed By Fatigue, Dizziness, And Fever After A Hand Injury Be Serious?

My husband injured the top of his hand and middle finger knuckle joint (accidentally slammed it in car door) 2 days ago, and his hand has been swollen for 1 day. He has been using cold compress as needed. There doesn't appear to be any bruising (on the outside) but now he has developed fatigue, dizziness and a fever/chills.
