Could Taking Magnesium Cause Skipping Of Heart Beat?

Why does taking magnesium 500mg daily seems to stop my occassionaly skipping heartbeat. I'm 45, overweight, and have blood pressure that averages 150/90. The skipping started about 3 months ago. But since i started taking the magnesium it has all but disappeared and i was wondering why?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Magnesium is a mineral with central importance in the normal function of your heart. Too low magnesium levels in blood can cause you to experience symptoms that include an irregular heartbeat, a symptom sometimes indicated by the presence of fluttering, or rapid heartbeats called palpitations.

Its very likely that levels of magnesium in your body were quite low, causing palpitations. Once corrected, palpitation goes away, but I would advise you to monitor serum magnesium levels. Please mention the medicines you are taking for high blood pressure, as diuretics if used cause hypomagnesia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Rishu Saxena
