Could The Pain While Swallowing Be Due To Tumor Marker Done 3 Years Ago?
I had thyroid cancer 5 years ago, my endocrinologist did a tumor marker about 3 weeks ago and everything was good. However I have had problems/pain when swallowing anything. I don t want to go to the doctor out of panic but I m worried it could be something serious.
Hello and thank you for asking! I read your query and understood your concern. Whatever the type of the the thyroid cancer was, the tumor markers are very sensitive to determine the relapses of the disease. There is only one ''pitfall'' let's say, if you had papillary or folicular thyroid carcinoma, while checking thyroglobuline (the specific tumor marker for them) you should check also the antithyroglobuline antibodies. If they are high, then thyroglobuline is not reliable as a tumor marker because may be antagonized by them and results falls negative. So you may discuss with your physician about this possibility. Hope the information will help. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta Guni
