Could Vaginal Bleeding During First Trimester Of Pregnancy Be Due To Utrogestan?

Hi, I am between 12 and 13 weeks pregnant. Been using 100mg Utrogestan pv every night since 6weeks. Started bleeding heavily 2 days ago. Gynae checked and all is ok. Upped dose to 200mg bd. Bleeding stopped completely after a day. But started again late last night. What are the chances of miscarriage at this stage in the pregnancy? Why does bleeding occur when everything appears normal?

Hi,

12 to 13 weeks is border line phase of pregnancy, when progesterone supply to fetus gets shifted to placental source. That is why, this becomes a delicate phase. In case of progesterone deficiency, the patient needs to take bed rest along with increase in progesterone dose. I would suggest to add bed rest to the raised progesterone (may be injectable form) for this period as per your gynecologist's advice.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

It is obvious that the bleeding you have is due to progesterone deficiency. As the baby grows, need for the hormone increases which should be Bourne by placental hormone after 12 weeks, 12 to 14 weeks is more risky time for bleeding as this is the time when placenta takes over.

To avoid mishap your doctor has increased dose but along with that patient also needs to take bed rest to avoid stress and bleeding. Please follow your doctor's advice. If there is some vital problem in pregnancy, the medicine may nor help so let the doctor decode about the plan of treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
