Developed Sinus Infection After Ear Drainage Leading To Headache

My 12 year old has had ear drainage for about 4 months. Pediatrician found nothing. Developed a sinus infection four weeks ago, resolved with Biaxin. One week later began a persistent headache that won t quit; ear drainage continues. Biaxin for 2 weeks did nothing. No OTC product worked for pain, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory - nothing. Seen by pediatrician 3x, urgent care center 1x, ENT did facial CT scan and cleared of any sinus infections, Emergency Room did Full Brain CT and again negative. Saw a neurologist who put her on Clindamycin, Elavil and Imitrex. Had improvement for a few days, but headache back again and is feeling loopy from Elavil. Imitrex didn t work, and got some relief from Aleve but is transitory. We are awaiting MRI scan, but since lab sent us home following the test with a disc copy of the scan, we feel that will probably also be negative. Never had a fever through all this. Will be seeing allergist and dentist next week - maybe it s rhinitis, or maybe it s impacted wisdom teeth? I m at my wit s end and spend my sleepless nights researching the internet. What do you think of all this?

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

First of all the middle ear infection tends to spread to the inner ear. So, your son should examine his inner ear function and the acoustic functions of his ears with a specialist in ear, nose, and throat.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dr/Mustafa, Neurologist
