Diagnosed With Chiari Malformation Type 1. Had Craniotomy. Have Headaches, Migraines, Stomach Pain. Treatment?

I was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation Type 1 & had a craniotomy & lamectomy on my C1. I also had calcified ligaments & tendons that were removed. I've recovered very quickly despite having some autoimmune illnesses, however I've started having bad headaches again & even even migraines. Today I suffered from the same type of headache that my neurosurgeon told me was an excretion headache & was part of Chiari's symptoms. I wasn't doing anything strenuous at all. I was laying across my bed reading. Then I felt a horrible pain in my stomach followed by an insistent need to use the bathroom. I then stand up to go into the bathroom & felt dizzy & nauseous. Then like a few occurrences before my surgery, I felt extremely hot as the blood rushed to my face/head & my head started hurting. My body temperature had risen to 100• & my BP was elevated. The pain wasn't as bad as before the surgery & neither was my BP or instant fever as high, but it was still painful & scary so my question is....... What is causing this or why am I having these strange symptoms?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

Your symptoms could be aggravation of migraine. In that case, there is no need to worry, and you would get better with medications such as rizatriptan or sumatriptan tablets.

However, in view of your recent surgery, we need to exclude any problems with your brainstem, such as any lack of blood flow, compression of that area, or infection. So, if your symptoms keep recurring despite medications for migraine, I would advise to do an MRI of brain including cranio vertebral junction.

Please discuss these issues with your neurosurgeon.

Best wishes,
