Diagnosed With Melanoma, Worried About Getting Lymphedema. What Can I Do While Recovering And Prevent This Problem?
Hello, I was diagnosed in July with Melanoma. I have had two surgeries and am now recovering (day 6) from have a superficial groin lymph node dissection. I have a drain and am worried about getting lymphedema. What can I do while I am recovering and resting to help prevent this problem now and in the future?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Lymph node dissection is commonly followed by lymphedema. The function of the lymph nodes is to clear the accumulated lymph in the extremities, however, after removal of the lymph nodes the lymph does not clear away and accumulated at the local site. The condition is managed by facilitating drainage by stockings and by raising the leg. Consult your surgeon for further details.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
