General & Family Physician Dr. Pavan Kumar Gupta's  Response
Hello,
The most important complications of long standing and poorly controlled diabetes are microvascular complications and macrovascular complications.
Microvascular complications mainly affect small blood vessels of retina, kidneys and nerves.Since type 2 diabetes is a slowly progressive disease,it can remain undetected for few years after onset.About 30% of type 2 diabetics show some evidence of microvascular disease at the time of diagnosis.
You should get your eyes tested and get kidney function tests done.
General principals of prevention of these complications are meticulous control of
Blood sugar and lipids by prudent diet, exercises, weight reduction and appropriate antidiabetic and lipid reducing medications.
Thanks
