Difficulty In Sleeping, Night Terror. What Kind Of A Doctor Should I See?
My brother (15) has been having difficulty sleeping. We both talk in out sleep, but we have no other sleep disorders (at least not that we know of or seems impairing). He screams occasionally and it can be scary. The most recent event was this past week. He woke up screaming, like a night terror, but work himself up and it took awhile to calm him down. However, he has no recollection of the dream. I can't seem to find any info in between night terrors (which he seems too old for) and nightmares. Should he see someone other than a therapist? What could it be?
The description that you have given is that of a night terror. Nightmares are usually vividly recalled and the individual gets back to normal within a few minutes. Night terrors are not well recalled, usually occur in the first third of sleep, and the individual is disoriented for a while on waking up. Although there is no need to worry in case the episodes are occasional, if you wish to consult someone, try seeing a psychiatrist or pulmonologist who has interest in sleep medicine.
Hope this helps. Best wishes.
