Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Do Albuterol And Benadryl Interact With Each Other, Decreasing Heart Rate?
I developed asthma last year around this time of year after back to back respiratory infections and bronchitis. I was prescribed albuterol to use as needed during my recovery. I didn t need it daily, but used it somE nights around bedtime when I d start to wheeze. By April, I didn t need it anymore. A few weeks ago I got another viral respiratory infection and the asthma flared up again by the end of the cold. I started needing my albuterol inhaler nightly because every time I laid down to sleep, I d get a tickle in my chest that wouldn t stop until I used the inhaler. I called my asthma and allergy doctor who prescribed me Qvar (80mg twice daily) which I started today. I ve also been having trouble sleeping (sometimes falling asleep, sometimes staying asleep) and waking up repeatedly overnight, which I m not sure is related to the asthma or the albuterol. Someone (not a doctor) suggested I might try taking benydryl at bedtime to help further with any possible allergies I may be suffering and also might help me sleep, too. I read online that mixing albuterol and benydryl could cause slow heartbeat or brain-oxygen issues. Is that accurate? Should I not mix these medicines?
You should never mix different medications together, interactions result in serious life-threatening conditions which can get managed but sometimes may get fatal.
Benadryl is Diphenhydramine which is an antihistamine. It is not a medication to treat Asthma, but you do benefit from it. Benadryl addictions are not good, take it only when needed. Do not get dependent on any medication.
Interactions and overdoses alter blood pressure or heart rate, hence when you are taking medications for Asthma you should get your laboratory & medical tests periodically to monitor the progress & check the side effects.
Stay away from Extremes of stress, anxiety, depression, euphoria or happiness. Any type of extreme situation (Emotional or physical) may trigger Asthma attacks. Stay comfortable.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
