Do Beta Blockers Cause Fatigue And Depression On Long Term Usage?

Hello, my father was just diagnosed with Congestive heart failure. He is on a beta blocker as a blood thinner, cholesterol pill, water pill and 2 types of blood pressure pills. Since he has gotten home, he is exhausted, over tired with little to no activity and is depressed. I ve read beta blockers can cause fatigue and depression. Are these side effects long term ? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, fatigue, depression, and trouble sleeping are some of the common side effects seen with beta blockers on long term usage.

I advise you to consult his doctor for an alternate effective but a safer replacement for beta blocker after stopping it gradually over several days or weeks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
