Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Do Hydrochlorothiazide And Coffee Cause Dehydration?
I ve taken 25 mg. Of hydrochlorothyazide for about 5 years for edema, and I am a fairly heavy coffee drinker. Can this ( the two together) cause dehydration?? The skin on top of my hands, when pinched, gives that impression. I m trying to drink more water now. My question: Is dehydration a concern? I m 84 and very healthy and active. thank you!
Coffee contains caffeine, which is considered to be a mild diuretic. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic and is known as ‘water pill'. It helps to prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention. It is used to treat high blood pressure.
Since hydrochlorothiazide causes excess passage of fluids through urine, it can cause sensation of excess thirst. Due to this, you may consume more water.
This symptom should stabilize in a few days. If it continues to bother you, kindly consult a physician for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
