Do Neomycin And Polymyxin Contain Sulfonamide?

Are neomycin and polymycin sulfa drugs? Are they in the penicillin family? I am in a program for school that is requiring us to have the varicella vaccination for clinical rotations, I need to know if this vaccine contains anything that would cause me a severe reaction as I am highly allergic to penicillin and sulfa drugs.

Hi
Thanks for trusting healthcaremagic for your health issues.

I understand your concern. Neomycin and Polymycin (contains neomycin) are not sulfa drugs. However varicella vaccine is not related with medicine. It's live but attenuated herpes virus given to protect from herpes infection in future. So it is also not sulfa drug.
As a preventive measure you should always tell your treating physician about your drug allergy.

Regards
Dr. Hiren
