Do Zoloft And Buspar Interfere With Each Other?

I am prescribed zoloft (I take the generic sertraline I believe, at 50mg) and had forgotten it a few days.. felt really stressed and my friend gave me one of her buspar I believe, at 5 mg and told me to take half.. I hesitantly did so and didn t think until right afterward that there may be a bad interaction between the two of them. Will I be ok?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
Yes, taken together it may cause harmful effects.

If taken together with Zoloft, Buspar can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome with symptoms such as confusion, hallucination, seizure, extremely high BP, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering, blurred vision, muscle stiffness, incoordination, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In severe cases it may result in coma and even death.

So, avoid taking Buspar along with Zoloft.
Take care.
