Do Anti Venom Injections Affect The Kidney Condition?

Hello Dr. Rynne,, my nieces husband was bitten on the left hand yesterday by a rattlesnake. They live in San Diego. He received medical Tx quickly. So far he has been administered just over 20 vials of anti venom. He is in ICU, BP is a little elevated, HR in 70 s, and still having many muscle contractions. There concern is now turned toward the kidneys/failure. Is this normal to take this much anti venom before beginning to see improvement? Scott Landis / YYYY@YYYY

Hi,

Actually, snake venom is liable to cause acute kidney damage (depending on the type of snake biting & amm of venom injected. Anti-snake venom given within 4-5 hours of snakebite reduces/prevents grave kidney damage.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
