Do Antibiotics Cause Loss Of Tasting Sense?

I was on antibiotics for six weeks. The bacterium that was in my system is now gone. Since Thanksgiving I have not been able to taste. Will I get my taste back? Not being able to taste is awful. I have been off the antibiotics for two days. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As a physician, I would like to tell you that some antibiotics do leave bad taste in mouth as they kill infection as well as normal bacterial flora in your mouth and gut. I would suggest you to take some probiotics like Cap Vibact and keep consuming yogurt with meals and you will be fine in 5 to 10 days.

I would also like to tell you that you should visit your physician as soon as possible if the metallic or bad taste in your mouth does not go away.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Abhijeet
