Do Brown Discharge And Missed Periods Indicate Pregnancy?

I have been tested and told that I could not conceive unless I tried Invitro. I have been having symptoms ofbrown discharge, missed period, bloating, nauseous, etc. I thought it maybe a cyst (I have had fibroid and cyst removal in the past). My doctor told me to take a pregnancy test...I took 4 all positive. I am not convinced that I am pregnant. Can it be ectopic? Hypothyroid disorder? Antidepressants causing the positive result?

Hallow Dear,

Any type of bleeding during any stage of pregnancy is not a good sign, particularly brown bleeding. Brown bleeding suggests that the baby is not viable.

Since your all 4 urine pregnancy tests are positive, you are definitely pregnant. However, the occurrence of brown bleeding is suggesting that you may be having missed abortion. Missed abortion is a condition where the baby inside the uterus is non-viable, still it is retained in the uterus. In such cases, it may take 8-10 days for the pregnancy test to become negative. Hence, positive pregnancy test will not help to confirm the diagnosis of missed abortion; ultrasonography will reveal the status of your pregnancy.

If it is missed abortion, you will have to undergo surgical evacuation of pregnancy to terminate the pregnancy. Delaying uterine evacuation may lead to the complications like clotting disorder leading to excessive bleeding (DIC), infection, etc. which are very serious.

Please report to your Obstetrician to confirm the diagnosis and undergo the required management ASAP.

OBGYN Dr. Nishikant Shrotri's  Response
Dear Madam,

Let me congratulate you on your pregnancy.

Now, let me solve all your queries one by one.

Hypothyroid disorders will not give false positive pregnancy test. There is no report that antidepressants give false positive pregnancy test. Usually, ectopic pregnancy gives faint positive result of urine pregnancy test. To get clear picture about this ultrasonography will be useful.

If you are pregnant, you should evaluate your thyroid function and start the treatment according to your Obstetrician's advice otherwise this condition may affect your pregnancy and/or baby adversely.

About continuation of antidepressants, you have to consult your obstetrician and psychiatrist jointly and take the decision.

The question is that based on which findings were you told that you cannot conceive naturally and need IVF.

Currently, my advice is to get ectopic pregnancy ruled out by ultrasonography and continue with the medication for other ailments only on Obstetrician's advice.

I hope this will give you guidance.
