Do Cognitive Impairment, Memory Loss And Confusion Indicate Alzheimer S?

Hello , Have a question pertaining to my moms health , lately we have noticed she has some sort of cognitive impairment , short term memory loss and constantly confused and in an anxious state . Her father died of Alzheimer s disease at the age of 68 , it progressed rapidly and within a span of five years he was gone . My mother is 67 now and I am wondering if we have a reason to worry considering the genetic disposition .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
There are many causes of dementia, but Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause. It is best for you to take her to a doctor for testing since some forms of memory loss are treatable (B12 deficiency, thyroid disorder). The doctor can test her for treatable causes and let you know if he or she thinks it is Alzheimer's.
