Do High Fever, Cough And Runny Nose Require An Infant To Be Hospitalized?

Hi my daughter is 5 months old she was running a fever on Monday of 102 F. We took her to the ER and they gave her some tylon and ran a urine and flue test and sent us home. On Wednesday she started coughing and having a runny nose with green mucus. Yesterday her temperature was 101 F. Still having a cough and runny nose. Today she has a Temp of 102.1, cough, runny nose with green mucus. Should I take her back to the ER?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms of your daughter seem to be related to an upper respiratory tract infection.

It is commonly a viral infection which does not need to be hospitalized. I would recommend giving her anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen syrup 2.5 ml three times a day.

I also recommend to give a lot of liquids and use a humidifier at home. If the symptoms continue or aggravate you can see your paediatrician for further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
