Do Medications For Hypothyroidism Cause Weight Gain And Irritability?

Hello. I wanted to know if the medicine used to treat hypothyroidism can cause weight gain and irritability. I just saw my doctor today after gaining another 20 lbs. without reason but he said weight gain is not a side effect and he is actually increasing my dose.

Thank you! Jennifer

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Jennifer.

The irritability and weight gain are both associated with hypothyroidism and not the medication. As irritability and weight gain are both still present or rather progressing despite being on the medication, it indicates that dosage may not insufficient which is why your doctor chose to increase the dose.

Best wishes.
