Do Metal Implants In The Chest Interfere With A Mammogram Procedure?

I had open heart surgery, on December 3, 2017, to replace my mitral and tricuspid valves, with mechanical valves.
I need to have a mammogram, but I have been wondering if it will be possible, due to the metal in the valves, as well as the metal wire used to close my rib cage. I know that they always make me remove my belly button ring, which I would never have considered to be a problem, for a mammogram, since it is so far down. Will there be any issues with the metal in my chest interfering with the x-ray images?

Hi,

Metal implants do not actually interfere with the mammogram. It’s because the mechanical implant is in the deeper plane and does not generally affect the quality of the image.

However, the breast implant can affect mammogram findings.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
