Do Psychotic Episodes Lead To Schizophrenia?

Hi. If someone has had two psychotic episodes within 7 years of each other, does this mean that the person is developing schizophrenia? Is it possible that these were two incidents of short-term psychosis, triggered by stress, cannabis, etc.? My son had the first episode was when he was 17, and it was considered to be a reaction to sensitivity to pseudo-ephedrine. He was taking cough medicine. Possibly also related to stress, due to attempting to stop smoking. He took medication for a year and was fine for another 6 years, with no relapse until last year. This year (aged 25), he tried to stop smoking again and was very stressed at work, and was smoking cannabis. Is it possible that these were two separate incidents, and that it may not recur?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There are five types of symptoms characteristic of schizophrenia: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized behavior, and the so-called “negative” symptoms.

However, the symptoms of schizophrenia vary dramatically from person to person, both in pattern and severity. I suggest to consult with the doctor to evaluate the condition.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
