Do Rectal Gas Cause Urinary Tract Infections?

I have been experiencing extreme rectal gas, no gas pains. What could be causing this????? Also I had a urine sample tested this week in anticipation of bladder botox injection this coming week, it came up positive for UTI. I have been prescribed anti-biotic, prior to this procedure. Am curious whether passing this rectal gas could have contaminated the urinary tract causing the infection?????

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Passing gas does not generally cause urinary tract infection. However, bacteria from the anorectal region (E. coli) can manage to migrate to the urethral opening and cause urinary infection in people with urethral dryness, dehydration, lack of normal urethral flora, diabetes etcetera.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal
