Do Sinus Tachycardia With Possible Left Atrial Enlargement And Nonspecific T-wave Changes On ECG Need Further Concern?

Hi, my daughter had a sinus tachycardia yesterday. Results say - possible left atrial enlargement - non-specific T-wave abnormality - abnormal rhythm ECG - unconfirmed report We were told nothing to worry about, just wanted to check if we have been given correct advice. Many thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Fever, anxiety, dehydration, pain, anemia, or even just exertion can cause the heart to beat faster than the normal rhythm. In medical terms it is called sinus tachycardia. It is not worrisome as long it is transient and there are no other symptoms. T wave changes are common in tachycardia and may be due to dehydration, electrolyte changes or disturbances when taking the ECG and not from the heart.

Left atrial enlargement can be confirmed by echocardiography and not ECG. Positive results can be obtained in case of an underlying valve problem. In case your daughter continues to have persistent rapid heartbeat, develops palpitations, fainting symptoms, chest pain, or develops breathlessness. Or if there is a family history of early heart disease then you are advised to get an echocardiogram done to rule out left atrial enlargement.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
