Do Sleep Apnea And Kidney Failure Cause Low Hemoglobin Level In Blood?
hi im a nursing student i was taking care of a patient who had low Hgb blood result my patient doesn t have anemia but he has sleep apnea and stage III kidney failure could those conditions be the reason to why his lab was abnormal? and if they are what are the implications that we can do to help the patient?
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. Kidney failure cause low hemoglobin due to loss of blood in urine and additionally malnutrition and reduced secretion of erythropoetin from kidney. 2. Improved nutrition along with erythropoetin injections is necessary. Particularly iron and vit B12 supplements is necessary. 3. Hematuria needs to be investigated seriously. If hemoglobin is less than 6g%, packed red cells transfusion will be necessary. 4. Sleep apnea would not cause low hemoglobin directly. It can affect routine, resulting in malnutrition. Hypertension is one of the major complication of sleep apnea, which can further complicate renal failure. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
