Do Turmeric Supplements Cause Elevated Potassium Levels In The Blood?
I have loved turmeric supplements for several years; however, my potassium got to very high levels that concerned my doctor and he didn t know what caused it. I had upper high normal for several years and about 3 months ago , he became VERY concerned. I took ALL of my meds to Walgreens and they checked them all and said that turmeric was high in potassium . I stopped it and my potassium dropped to normal. Is this a common side effect?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, turmeric contain high amount of potassium. A 100-gram serving of turmeric contains 2,525 milligrams of potassium, or 54 percent of your daily recommended intake. If you wont have any kidney or other metabolic problems you can take turmeric. But please check it other possibilities like drugs or kidney problems or renal artery stenosis etc. Please consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
