Do Vitamin Supplements From Burgstiner Wellness Protocol Cause A Seizure?

I know a woman a mother is taking oxycodone (looks like the 80 mg light green tablet) and methadone, and tizanidine (looks like the 4 mg white tizanidine). She was facing her right rear passenger seat, putting a bag in her rea passenger seat and slammed the car door on her own right temple and then hit the left temple on the side of the car, bent over double straightened up cursing a lot, and later in the day about 5-6 hours said she had to wake up in the plane on the floor with a firefighter pressing on her chest, and maybe had a seizure that she wanted to blame on my vitamins that she took. The vitamins are the Bergstiner protocol from Dr Carson Bergstiner MD (logosnutritionals.com) and My cardio for life by Dr Harry Elwardt (based on Louis Ignarro s 1999 nobel prize in medicine for helping to stop heart disease, Arginine increases nitric acid (1 hour) and eliminates from the body in 4 hours. No prior isotropy of sezure clarification please

Hello and Welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' services:

I have reviewed your query and this is my opinion.

The first thing that struck me was why was she taking oxycodone with methadone when the two together are synergistic for drowsiness and confusion? Would that not be the first thing one would think of before looking at her vitamins? Then, combine that with a muscle relaxer like Tizanidine and there is the question of whether she was medically fit to drive or even be able to coordinate her activities with such a prescriptive cocktail.

Nitrates increase cognition, not decrease it. Nitrates increase blood flow, not increase confusion and disorientation nor do they cause seizures. To answer your question specifically, one should go to the company the vitamins were obtained from and request any clinical studies they have on the vitamins in question and ask for any side effects identified to date in animal or human subjects taking these supplements. They may or may not have anything to help you.

In reviewing this case in its entirety these are the priority concerns:1) the number of synergistic medications currently being taken and their cumulative side-effect risk profile which may include seizures; 2) the fact that the woman sustained a closed head injury for which she had no evaluation or treatment for and 3) finally, a potential but improbable link to recent vitamin intake.

I hope my answer gives clarity to the situation in question and it is my opinion that in this case the vitamins had nothing to do with this incident.

Warm Regards,

Kathy Shattler, BS, MS, RDN
