Does Ammonia Help To Relieve Chronic Congestion And Pleural Effusion?

86 yr old male.Chronic congestion ,small pleural effusion left base. Afebrile. History of PARKINSONS AND A-FIB. Was treated with INVANZ IV for ESBL URINE. cONDITION IS WORSENING. sEDATED AND CONFUSED. bLOOD WORK IS NEGATIVE FOR INFECTION AND DEHYDRATION. WOULD AN AMONIA LEVEL BE GOOD TO DO?

Hi,

Not really. Ammonia is disposed of by the liver. The elevation is a (poor) marker for liver failure which can cause confusion. Regardless, it wouldn't be the cause of the confusion in someone without a reason to have liver problems.
Ammonia itself is rather noxious and can cause lung irritation.
