Does Amoxicillin Cause C-difficile Infection?

I am wondering if c-difficile is a side-effect of amoxicillin as my sister had an episode of that after a recent antibiotic, but I don t know which one she had. I just had a tooth extraction & have not yet taken the amoxicilling prescribed by my endodontist.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, Amoxycillin may cause clostridium difficile infection but chances are very very rare and that too occur in immuno deficient state and when taken for longer duration of time. In your case chances would be very rare. You can take as advised by your doctor. Stomach upset and diarrhea may occur with Amoxycillin.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to ask for follow up question and I will be happy to help you.

Best wishes,
Dr. B R Hudda
