Does Amoxicillin Cause Hearing Loss?

I have ringing in my left ear and also drastic hearing loss. I am a musician and have been exposed to loud sound for many years. At a recent performance there were piercing loud sounds and I have lost much hearing in my left ear. Also I ! ve been taking amoxicillin for what I believe is a sinus infection. Can amoxicillin cause deafness?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

No, amoxicillin does not cause deafness. The primary illness for which you have been prescribed amoxicillin including ear infection or nasal congestion can cause temporary ear loss. It is due to a blocked Eustachian tube

Once it is unblocked, your hearing will be back to normal again. However, check your ears by ENT specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
 Dr. Albana Sejdini
