Does Atorvastatin Cause Pain In The Legs?

I am currently taking atorvastatin for high cholesterol, this is a new drug for me. I now have pain in right leg from my hip all down the outside of my leg. It hurts when I get out of my car, it hurts when I walk, it aches at night when I am laying in bed. Doctor said the medication can cause muscle pain. She told me to take my pill every other day instead of every day, but the symptoms haven t changed any, it is still painful. What do I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello. Atorvastatin can cause muscle pain, either pain in legs or anywhere. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

This drug may rarely cause muscle problems (which can rarely lead to very serious conditions called rhabdomyolysis and autoimmune myopathy). Tell your doctor right away if you develop any of these symptoms during treatment and if these symptoms persist after your doctor stops this drug: muscle pain/tenderness/weakness (especially with fever or unusual tiredness), signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine). In case your doctor feels the need to change the medication he/she may put you on different medications.
