Does Azos Cause Dark Vaginal Discharge?

Is it possible that azos could change the color of my vaginal discharge? It is the same color as my urine. I called my obgyn and they did not seem concerned about this potentially being caused by a fastula. The nurse said it is possible that my color change is due to azos

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, it can cause discoloration of vaginal secretions.

Azo (Phenazopyridine) is a dye which exerts analgesic action in the urinary tract & provides symptomatic relief from burning sensation & urgency due to inflammation of the urinary bladder or urethra.

It is known to cause orange red discoloration of urine, vaginal secretions or saliva. There's nothing to worry about it as it's a harmless reaction due to the chemical substance present in the dye and it will disappear upon discontinuing the medication.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
