Does Ciprofloxacin Cause Tics?

I am being treated for diverticulitis. I am on Cipro. My son was recently in the hospital with diverticulitis. He was on ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole. (Intravenously). I noticed that he developed a tick. He is still on this medicine (pill form) and he still has the tick. Is this a side effect of either of these medications.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Ciprofloxacin is a commonly prescribed antibiotic and it is regarded as one of the safer antibiotic. Tics or abnormal movements are not reported with Ciprofloxacin use. It could be something else and if the tics persist consult a neurologist and get evaluated.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
