Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Coumadin Intake During Pregnancy Affect The Foetus?
I am 26 yrs old and have been on Coumadin for blood clots in my right underarm and right clavicle and have just tested positive for pregnancy 2-4wks. I have gone to a ob/gyn and received very vague answers to my questions. The ultra sound also showed two spots, one small round spot and one L shaped spot quite a ways apart. I would really like to know what the chances of this being a viable pregnancy or what percentage of the pregnancy being abnormal or danger to myself. If this were in different circumstances and I was not on the Coumadin, I would be very excited. Can you please give me some direction or if I need to get a second opinion?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Coumadin is contra indicated in pregnancy as it can cause serious complications to your baby. If required you have to change to Heparin instead of Coumadin. Do a repeat ultrasound after two weeks and if the gynecologist suspect anything abnormal better to go for termination.
You have to avoid such drugs before planning to get pregnant.
Wishing you good health.
